- MARTINEZ ACADEMY OF ARMS -
The Sword Through the Centuries

Jared Kirby and the Martinez Academy of Arms are proud to present a demonstration of the sword through the 17th -19th centuries. After a short presentation, fencers will demonstrate common weapons of the time such as the Spanish Rapier and French smallsword. The presentation will finish with a look at the similarities and differences between the Italian and Spanish Sabre.

The Martinez Academy of Arms is a unique school that preserves the tradition of fencing as the study of the sword in its realistic application in personal combat. Entering the Academy, one steps into another era and finds a serious group of practitioners dedicated to the art of the sword. Jared Kirby has been involved in Western Martial Arts for over fifteen years. He has trained at the Martinez Academy of Arms for the last ten years and is an Instructor of Spanish and Italian Rapier as well as French foil. He is also currently the fencing instructor at SUNY Purchase and teaches in New York City. Jared has taught a variety of workshops across the US and around the world including Canada, England, Scotland, Finland and Italy.

- STARKALL -

Returning from Cologne, Starkall will share a story about forgotten ships and spirits, and the greatest wonder of all - the sea - because every dream we have is a voyage into dark waters. Ships are much more than dead things. They are vessels full of visions, even those who are lost - in wrecks and ghost ships. Patiently they are waiting for a captain who has the courage to navigate them home. Those vessels, dead or alive, are carrying a thousand tales across the oceans. Once you are on deck you a part of the legend. So listen to the wind in darker nights, when it blows from the sea! Listen carefully and set your dreams outward bound!

- REVUE NOIR -

Revue Noir is the dramatic collaboration between dark cabaret chanteuse
Nicki Jaine and Black tape for a blue girl leader Sam Rosenthal. Residing
somewhere between rock, cabaret and torch singer, Nicki's captivating
performance embodies the decadence and sorrow that filled the nights of

screams out, setting a mood of desire and despair. When Nicki is not
performing solo or in Rosenthal's Blacktape, the duo occasionaly rise from the bottom of the sea to perform together as Revue Noir, this is the first such show in four years. - ANTONIA PUGLIESE -

Antonia Pugliese grew up in the 20th century as the daughter of an eccentric dance teacher. She has been a performing member of the Commonwealth Vintage Dancers since she was thirteen, and is knowledgeable about dancing and the ballroom throughout the 19th century and beyond. Based in the Boston area, she has studied vintage dance in Newport (RI), Vienna (Austria), and California. She has taught at various venues, including Civil War reenactments, science fiction conventions, and the Newport Vintage Dance week. She has also been really enjoying doing her own research and reconstructing dances from period sources.
On Saturday, Antonia will be giving a short lecture about the nineteenth century ballroom. If you have ever wondered what a historical ball would have been like, or how you would be expected to behave at one, then consider this your crash course (not literally, of course) in the nineteenth century ballroom! Also expect some short demonstrations, and, time permitting, some more interactive dances, easy enough that anyone could learn them, elegant enough that anyone could look good dancing them, and fun enough that everyone should enjoy them.
