Court jesters, fire breathers, diabolists and roving minstrels thrill and delight to the mystic sounds of a live funerary orchestra as you contemplate the sweet embrace of the afterlife in a dark, romantic dance with Death. Decadent scenes from the underworld will come alive before your eyes in our Cabaret de la Mort, hosted by the one and only Madame MissAstrid VonVoomer.

Dancing lions, giant serpents and naughty satyrs beckon you to join their mischief. But if heavenly delights entreat you, enter into the Enchanted Forest and spread your glittering plumage amongst fairies and fauns, giants and witches in a spellbinding, mythic paradise.
Whichever world you choose to venture within, the three floors of our majestic landmark Victorian mansion offer dangers, thrills, and pleasures beyond compare. However, a word of warning: Humans are ruthlessly hunted in the Savage Kingdom, and bold travelers are well advised to disguise their hominine fragility.

In keeping with our tradition of welcoming the arrival of spring in a colorful celebration of fantasy, the theme of this year’s Dances of Vice Spring Ball is a German Mayfair (Maifest) inspired by the tales of The Brothers Grimm.
The Bavarian-style Oak Room of the historic Grand Prospect Hall conjures an idyllic vision of German folklore, where live music, cabaret and dancing will take place amidst the lush trees, colorful flowers and water fountains of a lavish, enclosed biergarten.
A full menu of delicious traditional Bavarian and German fare will be available to visitors, as well as homemade apple strudel and cakes that would satisfy even Hansel and Gretel’s notorious sweet tooth.
DRESS CODE: Mayfair and spring themed attire is encouraged. Draw inspiration from any number of Grimm’s fairy tales, from Red Riding Hood to Snow White, and Cinderella.
OVERVIEW: Fraught with tension and uneasy alliances, the interwar period saw a surge in devil-may-care decadence around the world, and no greater than in the legendary sin cities of Shanghai, Paris and Berlin. These oases of transgression, licentiousness and wanton abandon fostered some of the most magnificent art, music and performance of the 20th Century: no one knew how to celebrate in riotous ecstasy quite like these three. Together, the vibrant ballrooms and cross-cultural confluence of Shanghai, the bawdy cabaret halls and romantic revelry of Paris, and the unchained hedonism and kinetic frenzy of Berlin's nightclub scene conjured a trifecta of international intrigue and lavish libertinism - and in this seductive spirit of subversion, we extend our hand to you.
Paris, City of Light - August 14, 2015
The city of seduction never burned brighter than in the years following World War I. Paris ignited in the 1920s and 30s, entreating pleasure-seekers from all corners of the earth to its smoky cabarets and dancehalls replete with ex pats, ne'er do wells and lovers looking to get lucky. These "crazy years" in the city of lights hosted some of the greatest creative minds of the century, from Salvador Dali and Man Ray to Josephine Baker and Cole Porter. Immerse yourself in jazz age jubilation, surrealist insouciance, literary glitterati, and showgirl coquetry. Luxuriate in Parisian freedom and its attendant thrills as you gratify all your senses in a seductive night of synesthesia and electric exaltation.
BERLIN - September Song - September 25th, 2015
From the ribald to the revolutionary, Berlin between the wars drew a dazzling class of artists, intellectuals and aesthetes. Brecht, Berber and Benjamin were just a few who set the tone for this hotbed of intellectual (and skintellectual) rigor, where creatures of the night and polysexual pleasure-seekers came to life in vivid Expressionist tableau, bold Bauhaus designs, and daring Dadaist performances. For one night only, partake in Weimar decadence at its finest with characters plucked from the cabarets, the cinema and the streets. Paint your lids and lips and twist your languid limbs into dances of vice, horror and ecstasy - with a rare performance starring the incomparable Isengart with Grandpa Musselman & His Syncopators.
Dances of Vice invites you to set sail on an adventure of seductive espionage around the Hudson and New York Harbor aboard a gorgeous Civil War-era schooner as a scintillating burlesque and variety floor show unfolds against spectacular views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey and The Statue of Liberty.
This summer's cruise takes place on various dates each month between May-September, featuring a different theme and cast for each sail.
See you on deck!
Sailing at 9:45PM from Slip 1, Battery Park.

Saturday, July 4, 2015 @ The Gansevoort Park Rooftop
It's Vespas vs Tritons, mop tops vs pompadours, miniskirts vs pencil skirts and sharkskin vs leather in this celebratory face off between Mods and Rockers this July 4th at the Gansevoort Park Rooftop.
Soak in three sun-kissed levels of open air terraces, classic cocktails, beach cabanas, cotton candy and BBQ while live bands, gorgeous go-gos and delinquent DJs hit the deck to the sounds of live surf rock, beach pop, rockabilly, bossa nova, swing and jazz.
Featuring: Banda Magda - Eddie Clendening & The Blue Ribbon Boys - The Clams - Nick Palumbo Trio
SHANGHAI in the 1920s and 30s tantalized the British, American, French and Chinese alike with its lawless streets and dens of sumptuous iniquity. Known as "the wickedest city in the world," artists, politicians, entrepreneurs, diplomats and the dispossessed roamed it's winding streets, chasing thrills at every turn. Strains of jazz mingled with Hollywood film music and Chinese folk melodies in the night air, while this heady sonic melange drew the ire of burgeoning leftist and Nationalist movements, who denounced these hypnotic new sounds as "opium for the masses."
The so-called "Paris of Asia" even surpassed its European counterpart with the sheer volume of drugs, sex, sights and sounds offered to bold adventurers from far and wide. Enter this paradise of the flesh with your wits about you: come as a boisterous mobster or his made up moll, a traveling aristocrat, foreign dandy, or an artist hell bent on delectation and exploration.

NEW YEAR'S EVE - December 31, 2014
It’s a casting call for ingenues, leading men, studio moguls and celluloid stars this New Years Eve, as Dances of Vice stages a cinematic journey through the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Spend your last night of the year at the pictures and take in 3 three floors of live music and entertainment, with each one themed 1940s-1950s, 1920s-1930s, and 1890’s-1920’s. Whether you’re a plucky Clara Bow or a smoldering Theda Bara, a jaunty Charlie Chaplin or a ravishing Rudy Valentino, mum’s the word in our Silent Film parlor, where the talkies have yet to take over. Watch your favorite gents and dames in black and white while live ragtime piano riles you up and transports you from Metropolis to City Lights to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
The Gelber & Manning Sextet fills our second floor Deco Ballroom with the spirited sounds of 1920-30s hot jazz, while The Tickled Pinks take court on the third floor with their signature style of big band swing and Andrews Sisters era boogie-woogie. Fencing ghosts. Tap dancing demons. Erotic blood baths. And so much more to satisfy your dark heart's desires.
Hailed by The New York Times as a "natural provocateur" and the creative force behind New York’s “nightlife for exhibitionists", Dances of Vice producer Shien Lee presents the 6th installment of the legendary Phantasmagorey Halloween Ball on Halloween Night, 2014.
This year's fiendish stomp is sinspired by the notorious Heaven and Hell nightclubs of 1890s Paris: guests will be led from room to room as they experience supernatural visions of Heaven and Hell within a private, four-story Victorian mansion in downtown Manhattan.
The dress code is strictly otherworldly: come dressed to dance with the demons or exalt with the angels. Forlorn seraphim, cherubim and saints will rub shoulders with winking witches, fire-breathing demons, and the living dead while incendiary performances from our sordid skeletal symphony stoke your savage appetites.
At the stroke of midnight, a sinfully rich dessert buffet will be served exclusively to guests of “The Devil’s Tea” (See Menu: Additional ticket required), followed by a decadent fashion show for the damned by Hell’s resident dandy, PUREVILE!
Prepare your death mask before having your funeral portrait taken in our Victorian postmortem photo booth, and leave behind an otherworldly memento mori of your one night on this immortal coil. Angel horns and devil trombones, you are invited!
“Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.” -Mark Twain
A collection of photos and video from our previous two circus themed events. Who knows when the Dances of Vice caravan will be back again?
“Life is intrinsically, well, boring and dangerous at the same time. At any given moment the floor may open up. Of course, it almost never does; that's what makes it so boring.” -Edward Gorey
Our fifth annual Halloween celebration of all things whimsical, dark, and Edward Gorey was our favorite to date. Guests dressed as woeful widows, hapless children, vengeful villains and ghouls were invited to roam free in a grand Victorian residential palace built in the style of a Renaissance palazzo, as dancers, musicians and opera singers performed in the crowd under projections of dancing skeletons, giant spiders, gilded bats and cobwebs.
We look forward to seeing everyone at PhantasmaGorey 2014!

The Grand Shipwreck Ball in 2009 was our three-day nautical themed gathering of castaways, sailors, glittering mermaids, sea sirens, pirates, romantic sea captains and scalawags at the historical Fort Hamilton, with a pre-party cruise aboard The Jewel.
Dances of Vice was named after the German Expressionist film Tänze des Lasters (dir. Rosa von Praunheim) about Anita Berber, the infamous nude dancer from Weimar Berlin. In it, Anita stands for the triumph of madness and creative expression over societal restraints and convention, and Dances of Vice carries over the same spirit.
Here is a collection of images from our Weimar themed tributes to this incredible era of creative and intellectual ferment.
Dances of Vice rings in 2013 with the following dynamite cocktail:
3 Amazing Bands. 15 Sensational Dancers & Cirque Arists. 6 Glamorous Hosts. 3 Wild DJs. One unforgettable New Year's Eve. And you.
See you next year!
"When good Americans die, they go to Paris." -Oscar Wilde

In the past, our Spring Ball programs have featured music ranging from Baroque opera and harpsichord to Roaring Twenties jazz, whimsical spring fashion shows, and once even a special performance from celebrated chamber rock musician Melora Creager of Rasputina. We look forward to planning the next Spring Ball in 2015!
